Installation Guide for Interior Terrazzo Tiles

Proper installation is just as important as selecting the right tile design. Follow the guide below to ensure a successful installation of Secoin interior terrazzo tiles.

1. SURFACE PREPARATION AND TILING

Step 1: Prepare the subfloor

– If tiling directly on concrete: Use a laser level or water level to check flatness. If uneven, the surface must be chiseled, patched, and repaired to achieve a level base.
– If tiling over sandy ground: Flatten the sand, pour a concrete layer to stabilize the base, then apply a 5–7 cm thick cement mortar bed. Allow it to set for 24 hours before installation.

Note: Ensure the surface is clean and dry before installation.

Step 2: Layout and positioning

Mark reference lines using chalk lines or string to align tiles accurately according to the layout plan.

Step 3: Prepare the adhesive

Use a high-quality, fast-setting tile adhesive suitable for terrazzo.
– Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to mix the adhesive properly.
– Apply 0.5–1 cm of adhesive evenly onto the subfloor using a notched trowel.

Step 4: Apply adhesive to the tile back

Back-butter each tile by spreading adhesive on the back surface for enhanced bonding.

Step 5: Install the tiles

Place the tile on the prepared area, tap gently using a rubber mallet to adjust to the correct height.
Maintain a minimum 2 mm joint gap between tiles for grouting.

2. PRE-GROUTING PREPARATION

– During installation, keep tile surfaces clean. Do not let adhesive dry on the tile surface.
– After adhesive is set, clean the surface using a soft cloth and rinse with a diluted neutral detergent.
– Rinse again with clean water and dry the tiles thoroughly.

Note:
– Do not walk on or place heavy objects on the tiles within the first 24 hours.
– Grouting should begin 2–3 days after tile installation.

3. GROUTING

Use a flexible cement-based grout specifically formulated for terrazzo tiles. Do not use regular cement grout. Select high-quality grout from reputable brands.

Step 1: Clean before grouting

– Ensure all joints are free from dust and debris using a vacuum cleaner.
– Protect the tile surface with a primer or sealer before grouting to prevent staining.

Note: Tile surface must be clean and dry before grouting.

Step 2: Apply grout

Fill joints completely and evenly using a rubber float.

Step 3: Remove excess grout

Wipe away excess grout immediately with a damp sponge or cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals.

Step 4: Final cleaning

Use a neutral pH detergent to clean the surface.
Avoid bleach or acidic cleaners. For stubborn stains, use a soft scouring pad or fine sandpaper with care.

4. SEALING

After grouting and cleaning, vacuum the floor and wipe it again with clean water or diluted neutral detergent. Once dry, apply a suitable terrazzo sealer to protect the tile surface and enhance durability.
