At the end of 1997, Secoin opened a new and ambitious chapter in the construction materials industry: a business trip to Italy in search of a partner for terrazzo tile technology transfer. Eventually, Secoin signed an exclusive cooperation agreement with OCEM, the world’s leading manufacturer of hermetic press equipment for terrazzo production. This strategic decision laid the foundation for the terrazzo tile industry in Vietnam.

The First Terrazzo Tile Produced in Vietnam (September 24, 1998)

After months of preparation – from renting a workshop in Cau Dien (Hanoi) to importing equipment and bringing in Italian experts for installation – on September 24, 1998, the SETERRA 1 factory produced the very first terrazzo tiles in Vietnam. Though the Italian word “terrazzo” was unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce at the time, Secoin registered it as an exclusive trademark. Over time, “terrazzo” became the common name for this artistic cement tile across all 63 provinces of Vietnam.

“Ho Guom” Tiles – A National Symbol of Excellence

Just one year after their debut, Secoin terrazzo tiles were chosen for the renovation of main streets in Hanoi to mark the 990th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi. Among these, six beautiful patterns were selected for paving around Hoan Kiem Lake, giving rise to the beloved nickname: “Ho Guom Tiles.” This remarkable milestone quickly spread: sidewalks in District 1 (Ho Chi Minh City), the imperial city of Hue, and today, terrazzo tiles by Secoin can be found on sidewalks nationwide.

Exports – Reaching International Markets, Proving Quality (1999–2025)

At the end of 1999, just one year after beginning production, Secoin started exporting terrazzo tiles to Japan – a market known for its strict standards. For 25 consecutive years, Secoin terrazzo has remained present in Japan’s leading construction material systems. Beyond Japan, Secoin products are available in many countries, including five states in Australia, the USA, Canada, European nations, and more than 60 countries across six continents – affirming the strength of a Vietnamese brand on the global stage.

Technology Transfer – Igniting the Terrazzo Industry in Vietnam

Beyond production, Secoin transferred technology and supplied OCEM equipment to nearly 20 factories, among a total of 50 non-fired building material plants that the company has helped set up nationwide. In parallel, many domestic companies began manufacturing terrazzo equipment. Today, more than 100 local producers are engaged in terrazzo tile production, contributing to a rich and thriving construction materials industry.

Standardizing Quality – Terrazzo as a National Brand

Rapid growth brought about the need for standardization: in 2007, the State issued TCVN 7744, the national standard for terrazzo tile quality; in 2013, it was upgraded to TCVN 7744:2013. Around the same time, “Terrazzo” was officially recognized as a generic product name, and Secoin was recognized as a National Brand.

Terrazzo – A Green, Sustainable Material for the Future

One of terrazzo’s most significant values lies in its sustainability and environmental friendliness. Secoin terrazzo is produced entirely with non-fired technology, reducing CO₂ emissions compared to traditional fired bricks. Free from harmful chemicals, the tiles are absolutely safe for users and friendly to the living environment.

Using cement, stone powder, pigments, and recycled aggregates, terrazzo reduces the exploitation of natural resources while maximizing available materials. This represents a perfect harmony of aesthetics and environmental responsibility. Secoin has positioned terrazzo as a key product for sustainable development, contributing to Vietnam’s Net Zero 2050 goal.
